MALAYSIAN PEACOCK MANTIS (2005)

Acrylic on illustration board 11" x 6"
Their upright stance and mobile, large-eyed head give the mantids an intelligent bearing that has made them a favorite insect family of mine. One of the most handsome mantid groups is the genus Creobroter, of the Old World tropics. The Southeast Asian species C. apicalis, which is pictured here, is one of several that sport a large eyespot on each forewing. In the background, an Oriental Civet (Viverra megaspila) retreats from a forest clearing.
