The rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was originally native only to western North America in waters draining into the Pacific. It has proven itself the ideal species for captive propogation and transplantation as a game fish though, and has been introduced throughout the continent and into waters as far away as New Zealand. This painting is in large part an overt theft of Escher's lithograph "Three Worlds" in which the viewer gazes through leaves floating upon the water's surface upon a koi beneath and reflections of trees above. I injected another aspect by introducing the reflection of an osprey (Pandion haliaetus), hovering above with feet lowered, prepared to dive at our protagonist. |
