India ink wash on Canson paper 14" x 10" $4,000. Across much of sub-Saharan Africa, one or more of the six species of Bycanistes hornbills can be found in a variety of forest types. The Grey-cheeked, or Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill (B. subcylindricus) is typical of the group: medium-sized, with a white rump patch and a tall casque on the bill. Like most hornbills, it feeds on fruits, insects, and a small vertebrate here and there. This species comprises five disjunct populations across equatorial Africa, one in Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Togo, two in Nigeria and Cameroon, another stretching from southern Chad to western Kenya and Burundi and one in northern Angola. |
